• Handcrafted stoneware tableware in a wabi-sabi spirit •

The wabi-sabi, the beauty of imperfection

In the traditional Japanese culture, wabi-sabi is a philosophy that breathes new life and value into forgotten and imperfect objects. It brings ancient objects back into the present and bestow an important position to these handmade objects which are bearers of meaning and history.

Handcrafted creations are also essential to wabi-sabi. Art objects, decorative objects and hand-made ceramic dishes are important and bring personality as well as serenity to your home.

Handcrafted ceramics in a wabi-sabi spirit

Elephantom.Design ceramics have a distinctive style of their own but the desire to bring that wabi-sabi touch to one of the collections was too strong to resist. To bring a special beauty in a wabi-sabi spirit to these stoneware cups, a little touch of imperfection was therefore essential. Maintaining the modern spirit of Elephantom.Design's hand-crafted ceramics, creating sturdy mugs for everyday use, paying attention to the pieces' harmony while at the same time allowing space for pretty imperfections that would be a real pleasure to look at.

Unlike most of the Elephantom.Design cups and mugs, these stoneware cups / mugs have not been thrown on the potter's wheel, as it was necessary to avoid the symmetry that the wheel invevitably provides. To obtain the needed asymmetry, the clay was poured into a slip casting mold specially built by me in the workshop. Once the base shape was obtained, each of the cups were then manually reworked, in order to avoid the standardization of items generally associated to this type of method. Although in harmony, all cups are different. Their shapes are irregular, their glaze has been applied in layers in order to obtain a turquoise cameo in pastel tones and communicate an aesthetic and simple artisanal spirit.

Settle down, take a deep breath and enjoy your tea in a pretty wabi-sabi Elephantom.Design cup.
